Live blog: Patty Spitler recovers from knee replacement surgery

3/06 update from Patty

A friend of mine who also went through joint replacement therapy recently said, “Just remember, this is a marathon not a sprint.”

How right she is!

A little over three weeks ago I had my total right knee replacement surgery, and just today, March 6, I started my outpatient therapy. My wonderful friend/assistant Rita Rose will be driving me over the next few weeks to Team Rehabilitation Physical Therapy in Broad Ripple.

My next phase of recovery is under the watchful eye and caring hands of Brian Stockman who is the clinic director. He seems calm yet forceful and certainly knowledgeable, so I am happy to let him take charge of my much “knee-ded” therapy.

Oh yes, and I must add that there is a special greeter at the facility who is more than happy to encourage your progress while you're working out. His name is Oakley, and he gave me a sniff and a lick for good luck.

Next visit I need to make sure I have treats for this staff member!

2/22 update from Patty

It was nice to get out Saturday for a spa day!

Yes, following my total knee replacement surgery on Wednesday, February 12, today is the first time I have been out of the house! That's 10 days if you're counting . . . and yes, I'm counting!!

My friend and assistant Rita Rose strongly suggested that I get moving . . . and she was right! I made arrangements to see my manicurist Sandra at Strandz Hair Design, and she was also kind enough to wash, condition and set my hair.

I was in desperate need of a little pampering!

So, not only did I get a nice, chauffeured car ride (I am not allowed to drive for 4 to 6 weeks), but I also got a little personal shine and sizzle to perk up my spirits! It was just what the doctor ordered.

By the way, thanks for all of the wonderful birthday wishes Friday. Getting spruced up Saturday was a nice celebration . . . good thing I had the fire extinguisher handy next to all those candles on the cake!

2/19 update from Patty

“Pull! Pull! Hold it!”

These are the commands. I've been getting lately as I work through physical therapy following my knee replacement surgery at OrthoIndy.

I won't lie, this is no “cake walk,” so to speak. There is pain and pills and pressure involved and I'm just trying to do the best that I can for a satisfactory outcome. My bone-on-bone right knee surgery has certainly been challenging!

The operation was February 12, so here we are a week later as I'm working with my Care Team physical therapist. Dhaval has come to my house a couple of times to date. He's a good guy, and I try to follow all of his instructions for the best outcome (and you know how I dislike following orders from men!! Ha!!)

So, moving forward, I'll keep you updated since we are “knee deep” in physical therapy right now…and as John Mellencamp would say, “Get a leg up!”

2/13/25 update

After knee replacement surgery on Feb. 12, Patty did well on her physical therapy tests before being released Feb. 13. Therapist Cory helped her navigate steps and take a long walk down the hallway at OrthoIndy Northwest. Coming home, Patty was helped by a friend, retired physical therapist Beverly Dausch, who helped with her exercises and gave her other recovery tips. Patty's tackling a tedious process with determination!

2/12/25 update:

Patty had her knee replacement surgery this morning and all went smoothly. Will post updates as she progresses!

2/10/25 Update:

We all have our challenges… Aches and pains that we deal with, and even though I don’t like to complain, I would like to keep you updated as to what my condition is right now and keep you informed.

On February 12 I’m having knee replacement surgery at Ortho Indy. I’ve put it off as long as I can and it needs to be done.

My every day walking and getting about has been very difficult lately, and as you know we’re going to Greece in October so I wanna be fit as a fiddle by then!

Keeping that in mind,I may be absent from Facebook and TV appearances over the next few weeks.

So keep me in your thoughts and send me some good juju!

I really ‘knee-d’ your good wishes !!!😜❤️
